I’ve always wanted to be a graphic designer, it’s just that when I left school, I had no idea that this was a thing. I’m always amazed when I come across a graphic designer over the age of forty. I want, nay, need to know how they found out about this. Did I miss a class? Was I excluded from the ‘cool jobs that you’d love’ workshop? Oh well, better late than never. On the upside the time I’ve spent mooning around being a jack of all trades has served me well. I’ve travelled a lot, lived overseas for a number of years, dug holes for a living (one of the better jobs, I might add), and owned and operated an art gallery. Now that I’ve found what I want to do with the rest of my life, I’m ready to give it my all.
Short term I’m focused on getting as much real world experience in graphic design as I can. Interning with Rusty next year is something I’m really looking forward to and hopefully AGDA WA will let me hang around and help out for another year. At the moment I favour branding, advertising and packaging. I like the challenge of creating purposeful work that requires problem solving and pushes me that step further. In the future I’d like to work in a design studio, freelance or both. Overall, I’m aiming to push myself, refine my craft and continue learning.
